One of Abbeyfield’s founding principles is to remove the loneliness many older people feel. Another of our key aims is ensuring our residents maintain their best levels of physical, mental and emotional health. That’s why we prioritise creating homes that are full of opportunities to learn, socialise and have fun.
Each home has a dedicated activities coordinator, whose first job is to ask residents what activities they’d like to do. There’s no forced fun here! Our residents are involved in planning resources for their home, trips, and events they’d like to celebrate. There’s more than just a Christmas party at our homes!
There’s always something going on in our homes, like:
Crafting: From scrap books to pottery – creating something with your own hands gives satisfaction we can all relate to.
Gardening: Fresh air, a Vitamin D top-up, watching something you care for flourish – there are no downsides!
Exercise: Low-impact physical activities, perfectly designed to include as many residents as possible. Tai Chi and dance lessons are two of our most popular current options.
Visiting entertainments:
Mind games: Sudoku, word searches and puzzles are always available on our huge virtual tables and in traditional formats. These are a great option when residents want to occupy their minds, but don’t feel like socialising.
Music: Residents hear a range of live music from the wonderful professionals and volunteers that come in for regular music afternoons. A whole variety of instruments, groups and musical styles – so there’s something to make everyone’s spirits soar.
This isn’t an exhaustive list. We’re open to any ideas that help all our residents make the most of their golden years – doing things they enjoy, with the support they need.
We tend to wait until the weather’s on our side before we organise shopping days, picnics, BBQs, and visits to local places of interest. A change of scenery is good for everyone, so we take the opportunity to get out and about as much as possible.
Residents can focus on enjoying the trip because all their practical worries are taken care of by our brilliant care team. Knowing that their needs are understood, and support is right there, is the only confidence injection that they need.
